Hey reader,
after my previous Useletter I got to thinking about why people don't start that project they've been thinking about, or making change in their work/ life, or simply trying something new. Much of the time it's fear. It could be a fear of failure, of what other people might think, what the cost might be, or a litany of other reasons. It's common and I feel these fears all the time, especially now as I'm building a new business. If we let it, the fear will prevent us from moving out of our comfort zone and taking on something new. When we feel like that we need something to help move us forward.

So this week, I've got an exercise you can do when fear is holding you back.

Fear Setting

I've become a little obsessed by an exercise called Fear Setting (it's also sometimes called a pre-mortem). I learnt about it through author, podcaster and technology investor/advisor, Tim Ferris, and I find it's effective at dealing with fears, goal setting and planning. It's relatively simple and effective at helping keeping me moving.

Instead of outlining it all here, I'm sending you straight to the horses mouth:
|
It's a long read, with an embedded TED Talk. Most of the text is covered in the talk, which is worth your 20 minutes to watch. If short on time watch the TED talk and skip to "Q&A: Questions & Actions" at the bottom of the article.

|
For a TL;DR version, not written by Tim Ferris but includes his TED Talk:

This includes clear instructions and some downloadable templates.

A little something to consider this week...

What is the story you're telling yourself?
|
...you know, the one that might be holding you back.
