Hey reader,

do you like podcasts? I'm a huge fan. I especially enjoy podcasts where people pull apart and analyse a concept or their process. It's a bit of coaching when I'm willing to listen to what I hear beyond what is said.

As I build unmeasured I sometimes worry about not having done enough or getting as far as I think I should have. I keep reminding myself that I'm only basically 3 months in to a project that I had always anticipated would take quite some time to get off the ground. I'm reminded that in our work we're running a marathon more often than a sprint and so often we overestimate what we can do in a day and underestimate what we can do in a year.

On the Broken Record podcast, Ezra Koenig described that he'd produced over 100 versions of many of the songs that made it onto Vampire Weekend's album, Father of the Bride, an album that took a few years to put together. It's a great reminder of the work it can take to create something remarkable. The experiments, the subtle changes in order to make our work better and good enough to put out into the world. Great art takes time. We need to focus on our decisions not the outcome. Song Exploder, is the aural equivalent of focussing on a decision not the outcome, a podcast "where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, to tell the story of how they were made". There's so much more to hear than the music in these shows.

We can never control outcomes, there is too much that is out of our control... pandemic anyone? Instead we must focus on our decisions, and the steps they represent. Keep focus on each step, then identifying and executing the next one.

I'm curious reader, what's on your plate right now? Are you thinking of making a change in something you're doing, or perhaps have a new project in mind? What's stopping you from taking action? What will the next 20 years look like if you take this opportunity? Might be worth taking 5 minutes to consider.

I got you
Michael

Changing it up...

I've been giving this newsletter some thought of late. I would like it to be something that is in support of you and less about me, a Youletter not a Meletter. There will still be brief alerts about what's coming up at unmeasured, links to the latest blogs, but mostly it will be content in support of you. A collection of wisdom, ideas and/or learning and most importantly useful to you. A Useletter!

It's likely that the format will change from week to week and I'm going to experiment a bit with content and configuration. I welcome all feedback, please send any through. I'm waiting by my Inbox.

A gem of wisdom from Adam Grant

"When people hesitate to give honest feedback on an idea, draft, or performance, I ask for a 0-10 score. No one ever says 10. Then I ask how I can get closer to a 10. It motivates them to start coaching me – and motivates me to be coachable. I want to learn how to close the gap."
