There’s a lot of people struggling right now.
Not enough work.
Not enough income.
Too much uncertainty.

I'm hearing many architectural practices are letting staff go and/or reducing everyone’s hours. It’s not the employee’s fault, they’ve worked hard and been a valuable member of the team. It’s an undeserved circumstance. Everyone is doing their best.

For anyone that’s found themselves in this position,
I want you to know, it’s not about you. You're enough.
And let me know how I can support you.

As I wrote in my last useletter, I’m also having to look for work. Accepting that unmeasured is not travelling as well as I’d hoped. It was a hard admission. There’s a sense of loss, failure and uncertainty.

But most of what comes up for me is just an unhelpful story I’m telling myself.

It’s times like this we need to be resilient in the face of uncertainty or misfortune.

So this fortnight, let’s chat about resilience.

A resilient practice

Over the last 4-5 years, we’ve all come to appreciate the inevitability of significant change. With many finding embracing change the most constructive strategy. Often requiring that we adapt and become more inventive.

Of course, easy to write, less easy coming to terms with what feels like failure and knowing trying something new might not work. Here’s some suggestions to assist you in being more resilient.

Find support

You don’t need to do this alone. Build a support network of friends, mentors and colleagues. Remember people love to help.

Wellbeing

Practice self care. Look after both your mind and your body. Meditate, get out into nature, eat healthily, exercise regularly, or whatever brings you joy. It’ll boost your overall wellbeing, making you more resilient to stress.

Set Realistic Goals

Construct small steps for making change. Make them achievable. Celebrate both small and large wins. Helping keep you motivated and delivering a sense of accomplishment.

It’s not a failure

Every failure is a successful learning experience. Use each failure to identify why it didn’t work and what to try next. This will assist you in getting closer to success.

Connect with purpose

Engage with why you became an architect (or whatever you’re doing). Staying connected to your purpose can help maintain motivation. Let your purpose guide you.
